Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Concrete Block Types

In the world of concrete blocks, there are an endless amount of variants. These varieties include what we’ve discussed thus far: block names and block uses. But in this article we are going to talk about the block types. We’re going to discuss different block shapes, sizes, styles, weights, and block decorative faces. There are so many different blocks out there and with all of their different attributes and features, you’re guaranteed to find some block to fit whatever project you are working on. So, let’s jump right into the different types of blocks:

V-Wedge Blocks

First off, we will discuss our most common block within our business, which is the v-wedge block. The v-wedge block is a special type of block because it has a unique interlocking system that is quite unlike any of the other blocks out there. This interlocking system is made up of v-shaped wedges that are located on different parts of the block. On the top and one side of the block we have a typical v-wedge shape that protrudes out of the block. Then, on the bottom and the other side of the block, we have a reverse version of that same v-wedge, but instead of sticking out, it makes what looks like a v-shaped dent in the block. This interlocking system is easy, efficient, and with its rebar handle loop ready to help move the block, it’s quite easy to get these blocks into your desired location. Each block has a rebar handle loop installed into the concrete on top of the block. Moving these blocks require no special rigging equipment, except for a chain. These v-wedge blocks come in a few different sizes. The full sized block measures 6’ x 2’ x 2’, while you can also choose from a few other size options: a 6’ x 3’ x 3’ block, 4’ x 2’ x 2’ block, a 3’ x 2’ x 2’ block, a 3’ x 3’ x 3’ block, and a 2’ x 2’ x 2’ block. The full sized block weighs in at about 3,600lbs. The 6’ x 3’ x 3’ block weighs 8,100lbs. The 4’ x 2’ x 2’ block weighs 2,400lbs. The 3’ x 2’ x 2’ block weighs 1,800lbs. The 3’ x 3’ x 3’ block weighs 4,050lbs. The 2’ x 2’ x 2’ weighs 1,200lbs. As for transportation space, on a typical delivery semi truck bed, thirteen of the 6’ x 2’ x 2’ blocks can fit per truck. Five of the 6’ x 3’ x 3’ blocks can be fit per truck.  Eighteen of the 4’ x 2’ x 2’ blocks can fit per truck. Eleven of the 3’ x 3’ x 3’ blocks can be fit per truck. Twenty-six of the 3’ x 2’ x 2’ blocks can be fit per truck. Lastly, thirty-seven of the 2’ x 2’ x 2’ blocks can be fit per truck. Again, these v-wedge blocks are a great addition to a number of projects. If you have any questions about these blocks, please give a call and someone from our team would be happy to talk with you.

Lego Blocks

Lego blocks is a name most of us recognize right? We tend to picture those little plastic, interlocking bricks we used to play with as kids, building whatever our hearts desired. Well, these are like the grown up, lifesize version of these blocks. These are the real deal. These blocks have special characteristics, just like how the v-wedge block has its v-wedges. Our lego blocks have a resemblance similar to the actual miniature, plastic toy blocks. But of course, ours are much much heavier and less colorful. The blocks have small, cylinder shapes on top of the block and small holes of the same shape in the bottom of the block that enable them to interlock. These blocks, much like the v-wedge, also come with a rebar handle loop, which makes moving the blocks a breeze. Our lego blocks also come in a few different sizes: a 6’ x 2’ x 2’ block, a 3’ x 2’ x 2’ block, a 5’ x 2.5’ x 2.5’ block, and a 2.5’ x 2.5’ x 2.5’ block. The 6’ x 2’ x 2’ block weighs 3,600lbs. The 3’ x 2’ x 2’ block weighs 1,800lbs. The 5’ x 2.5’ x 2.5’ block weighs 4,700lbs. The 2.5’ x 2.5’ x 2.5’ block weighs 2,350lbs. For transportation, thirteen of the 6’ x 2’ x 2′ blocks can be fit per truck. Twenty-six of the 3’ x 2’ x 2’ blocks can be fit. Ten of the 5’ x 2.5’ x 2.5’ blocks can be fit per truck. Finally, nineteen of the 2.5’ x 2.5’ x 2.5’ can be fit per truck.

True Lego or “Castle Blocks”

Knob Blocks

Very similar to the castle blocks, we have knob blocks. These blocks have the same type of structures on top of them as the castle blocks, except they only have two and they are a bit larger. Also, on top of the block is a little square indention where the rebar handle loop is located. These blocks come in two different sizes: a 4’ x 2’ x 2’ block weighing 2,400lbs and a 2’ x 2’ x 2’ block weighing 1,200lbs. As for transportation, eighteen of the 4’ x 2’ x 2’ blocks can be fit per truck and thirty-seven of the 2’ x 2’ x 2’ blocks can be fit per truck.

Dome Blocks

Next up we have dome blocks. Dome blocks are also kind of similar to the lego blocks, having a certain type of structure on top of the block that works as its interlocking system. The particular structure on this type of block is like a half a sphere on top of the block. By having the same type of shape carved out on the bottom of the block, these blocks can fit together smoothly on top of one another. These blocks come in two different sizes: a 6’ x 2’ x 2’ block, weighing 3,600lbs and a 4’ x 2’ x 2’ block weighing 2,400lbs. As for transportation, thirteen of the 6’ x 2’ x 2’ blocks can be fit per truck and eighteen of the 4’ x 2’ x 2’ blocks can be fit per truck.

Flat Blocks

The last block we will discuss is called a flat block. This block looks exactly what it sounds like: a flat, plain, rectangular block. These blocks are quite simple and are easy to use for a number of projects. These blocks come in three different sizes: a 8’ x 2’ x 2’ block that weighs 4,800lbs, a 6’ x 2’ x 2’ block that weighs 3,600lbs, and a 4’ x 2’ x 2’ block that weighs 2,400lbs. As for transportation, nine of the 8’ x 2’ x 2’ blocks can be fit per truck. Thirteen of the 6’ x 2’ x 2’ blocks can be fit per truck. Lastly, eighteen of the 4’ x 2’ x 2’ blocks can be fit per truck.

Decorative Faces

To add some character or personalization to projects, there is a decorative face option for a number of our blocks. Some of the face options we provide are called “brick”, “slate”, “random brick”, “random rock”, and “stucco”. These faces can be installed directly to the open faces of concrete blocks, creating some extra character and design to the blocks. This can be a great addition to many projects. If you have any questions about the decorative faces we offer, please give us a call!
